Jimmy Re the last entry in your Guest Book from Becky McLauchlan. They are looking for more info re McLauchlans from Stanley and I have contacted them re the late Jock McLauchlan and his late son, Grant, from The Tofts. She said her father/in/law emigrated in 1922 when he was 8yrs, after his Dad, Peter McLauchlan, was killed in the First World War, and he now lives in Michigan USA, aged 96 years. I checked the War Memorial at Feus Brae, as you suggested, and sure enough, here was his Dad's inscription. I took photos of the Memorial and emailed them to Becky which she will show to her f/i/law. He is apparently still very clear minded and very proud of his Stanley heritage, and recalls learning to swim in the River Tay, and living in King Street, next door to a family Donaldson. (Your Granny!) It's great that a lad of 96 years, still has very clear and fond memories of his (and our) village, despite never having been back all these years. Becky is to take her lap-top to him and show him your web-site with all the old photos, and she reckons that he will be chuffed to bits when he sees the old school photos, street photos, etc. She is to keep us posted and hopes to send you a photo of him, plus any old photos of Stanley that he still has. Congratulations Jimmy, on recovering another wee bit of our heritage that might have gone un-noticed, had it not been for your website. PC PC

My father-in-law was born in Stanley in 1914,and is still going strong at 96 . He lives in Royal Oak, Michigan USA. He came to the states with his mother when he was 8. His father Peter McLauchlan was killed in WWI,but I can't find any more info on him. He was also from Stanley. Any suggestions? My father in law (John) still speaks warmly of Stanley, but unfortunately he has never been back. I wiil see if he has any pictures of Stanley and send them to you. It's a wonderful site. Thank You for taking the time to do it.
Best Regards,
Becky McLauchlan

First let me congratulate you on the great site, my name is Rhoda Smith nee Duncanson, my sister Thel and I have just returned to Australia after spending a month in Scotland. We spent time in Stanley, staying at the Tayside Hotel, it was great, we lived next door in Isla Cottage, Brougham Street, so as children we spent many hours playing in the dance hall, also exploring the hotel, when our Dad (Daniel Duncanson) was doing the renovations. The new owners were thrilled with our memories of the place. We also lived in Athole Drive so whilst we were there we knocked on the door and Nan let us in to have a look which was very generous of her. Whilst in Stanley, we walked down the back of the mill and spent a good few hours going through the mill museum, we would highly recommend it for anyone travelling back to Stanley. The bonus was that the daffodils were out on the Mill Brae, still a hard walk back up but so worth it. We also spent the afternoon with Beth Kennedy, she is a mine of information, anyone who has the time should visit and capture the stories, she has. As you have said before, "us bairns that grew up in Stanley, back in the 50’s and 60’s were blessed to have that simple lifestyle”. |

Brilliant Web Site ! I grew up at 7 Athole Drive. My mum was Margaret who sadly passed away in 1987. Harry, Lydia and Margaret and Titch are my brothers and sisters.
It brings back great memories of growing up in a great wee village. Playing football at the Recs, Berry Picking, The Curling Pond, The Linn, Doon the Mill. I still live in Stanley with my wife Lorraine and boys Scott and Ross. Any old pals please get in touch. |

I would just like to thank all involved in donating the remaining amount from the 07/07/07 reunion fund to the local Brownie Pack. It was very much appriciated by the girls and we are planning on how to use the donation. When we do we will let you know! Thanks again, Leigh and girls |

Good to see your web site continuing to go from strength to strength, Jim. Now that I've taken (very) early retirement, I'm looking forward to being able to come home to visit Stanley much more often. |

Enjoyed the reunion on 07.07.07 and for a while kept up with the website and very interested in it. My husband Will and I are now back living in Houston, Texas, since March 2008 so be
sure to look us up if you are over here, My 60th birthday was in 2008 and my old friend at Stanley Mills, Linda Finnie (Paton) came to that. It was a great event and Betty, Billy, Sandy (McConnell)all came to Banchory to be part of a gathering of 60 guests - what a joy it was to see them. I intend coming to Stanley this summer when I am back to see what they have done to Stanley Mills. Hope to see y'all then. |
